Rail Temperature Measurement Systems
The Importance of Rail Temperature
Rail temperature plays a critical role in the mechanical behavior of Continuously Welded Rail (CWR). As temperature increases, rails are pushed into compression, and as temperatures decrease, rails are pulled into tension.
High rail temperatures can lead to excessive compression and track buckling, while low temperatures can produce excessive tension which increases the risk of rail breaks.
As climate change drives more frequent heat waves, sharper cold snaps, and greater daily temperature swings, rail systems face more extreme stress cycles, making rail temperature monitoring more critical than ever.
RailTemp Mo 40LC
The RailTemp Mo 40LC is a digital sensor that provides direct measurement of rail temperature. The sensor is designed to be installed out of direct sun on the web of the rail and is held in place with integrated magnets. The measuring range of RailTemp Mo 40LC is -10°C to +60°C.
RailTemp Mo 50LC
The RailTemp Mo 50LC is a digital sensor that provides direct measurement of rail temperature across an extended measurement range. The sensor is designed to be installed out of direct sun on the web of the rail and is held in place with integrated magnets. The device is capable of storing maximum and minimum values and even allows for an alarm tone to be played when a pre-set temperature is reached. The measuring range of RailTemp Mo 50LC is -50°C to +70°C.
RailTemp Mo 5000
The RailTemp Mo 5000 is a digital sensor that provides the temperature of an integrated rail cross section. The device is capable of storing the maximum and minimum readings across a period of time. The measuring range of the RailTemp Mo 5000 is -50°C to +70°C.
RailTemp BT10
The RailTemp BT10 is a digital sensor that provides direct measurement of rail temperature across a wide temperature range and supports Bluetooth reading measurements. The RailTemp BT10 can also support the connection of a K-type heat element to allow the device to measure two temperatures simultaneously; for example, one at the weld and another some distance from the weld. The measuring range of RailTemp BT10 is -25°C to +150°C (K-type range is 0°C to +1,000°C).
RailTemp GSM
The RailTemp GSM is a remote rail temperature monitoring system which automatically monitors rail temperature against user-defined thresholds for low and high temperatures. When a threshold is met or exceeded, the system automatically sends an alert via SMS text message to up to 4 different numbers. The RailTemp GSM can be powered via a solar panel or through a line connection. The measuring range of the RailTemp GSM is -50°C to +70°C.
The Support that You Need
If you’re considering purchasing measuring equipment from a generalist railway supplier with hundreds or thousands of unrelated SKUs you might want to think twice. Make sure that your supplier has the knowledge and experience to show you how to properly use the equipment in the field as well as work with data in the office.
